Hartwood Trails

February 2008 -- Peter Bergman is a 16 year old sophomore at Hampton High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 17 in Hampton. He started a project to label the trails in the park in late spring and recently wrapped up the final touches on the 35 miles of trails in the park. Peter also held fund-raisers to pay for kiosks where the maps of the trails are permanently displayed.

His project includes maps of the trails that have been produced through the county, signs on the trails and three kiosks that Peter and his friends built.

Peter, the son of Gary and Jennifer Bergman, of Hampton, hopes to receive his Eagle Scout rank. He spent over 100 hours on the project and thought it was fun.

The Allegheny County Parks Department has marked several trails in the park system as an incentive to increase participation in the 10,000 Steps Fitness Program, a project to get people to walk 10,000 steps a day to increase health and wellness.
